Previously I posted Va. Senate districts redrawn. Dem. Senator: “It’s an underhanded sneak attack.” Gov. McDonnell condemns the move. He may have condemned it, but he didn't exactly promise a veto either.
Virginia State Senator Donald McEachin:
"We have moved from the War on Women to the War on Voters."
Kudos to Rachel Maddow for staying all over this whole GOP election rigging scheme and bringing more of the news media along with her. Someone has to lead on calling out Republicans who rely on dirty tricks, lying, and cheating to give them an advantage in future (and past) elections, and Rachel is that leader.
She made that obvious in the following segment that she devoted to gerrymandering is this post: Doonesbury: Shhh… You didn’t hear it from the Speaker, but future of the GOP is gerrymandering, voter suppression! In the video included there, Rachel said:
“This is going on in the states right now. Hey beltway, wake up!”
They are finally starting to catch on. They better, because Virginia State Senate Moves Ahead on Electoral College-Rigging Bill.
Reminder, via the Maddow Blog (and please watch the video above):
That’s the Republican State Leadership Committee touting the effects of its Redistricting Majority Project, or REDMAP. They write:
President Obama won reelection in 2012 by nearly 3 points nationally, and banked 126 more electoral votes than Governor Mitt Romney. Democratic candidates for the U.S. House won 1.1 million more votes than their Republican opponents. But the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives is a Republican and presides over a 33-seat House Republican majority during the 113th Congress. How? One needs to look no farther than four states that voted Democratic on a statewide level in 2012, yet elected a strong Republican delegation to represent them in Congress: Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
…
[T]he Republican firewall at the state legislative and congressional level held.
